Centre of Advanced Studies:

In view of the outstanding quality of work carried out by the Department of Foods & Nutrition, it was elevated to the status of Centre of Advanced Studies (CAS) by ICAR in 1994, the first of its kind in Home Science in all the State Agricultural Universities (SAUs) in India.


The Department of Foods & Nutrition is one of the major departments in the faculty of Home Science. Besides being strong in the area of teaching, the department has developed a sound research and extension base, making them an integral part of its activities. The mandate of the department is to improve the nutritional status and create general awareness among the population regarding the importance of balanced diet, nutrition and its relationship to health in order to improve quality of life through enhanced physical and mental performance.


The department gives excellent practical training in all courses through hands-on experience. For this purpose the department is well equipped and strengthened with latest equipment. The following facilities are available with the department.

Undergraduate Programme:

UG student who opt for specialisation in foods & nutrition will be offered Nutrition & Dietetics as professional elective. The curriculum of this professional elective course was formulated with an objective to train students in the field of Nutrition and Dietetics to meet both the increasing need for trained dietitians in hospitals and for community oriented nutrition programmes of Government and Non-Governmental organizations. The undergraduate degree programme has courses designed to steer students towards self employment in tune with the demand in hospitals and community. The students graduating from this undergraduate programme will have specialized practical oriented education with on-the-job training to face the present day challenges.

UG Diploma In Catering Technology

The need to provide better and nutritious meals on large scale in hospitals and catering establishments attached to railways, airways, shipping lines, government offices, guest houses and schools has led the department to introduce UG diploma course in Catering Technology. This course trains the students to become competent in establishing and

Managing catering units, it also offers vocational training in variety cooking and quantity cooking management. The course aims to develop competency and skills among students for planning, preparation and management of catering establishments it also helps them to establish their own units.

Post Graduate Programme:

In order to collate, synthesize and deliver the vast information available in diverse areas of Foods & Nutrition, and also to make the curriculum more client based and employment oriented, the PG curriculum was bifurcated in 1996-97 into two specialized areas i. e Nutrition and Dietetics and community Nutrition.

M. Sc ( Nutrition & Dietetics)

In view of the importance of nutrition and dietetics in the present day context, corporate and other hospitals are creating several opportunities for those specializing in nutrition and dietetics. Recognizing this, the Post Graduate Programme in Foods & Nutrition with Nutrition & Dietetics as the area of specialization was introduced, which deals with advancements in nutritional science and its application in disease treatment.

PG Diploma in Nutritional Therapy

Students who are trained at the under graduate level in the basics of diet therapy need specialized training to orient them to critical care situations in hospitals. With this objective in mind, the self financed PG Diploma in Nutritional Therapy was formulated giving due importance to various aspects of critical care. This course will train students and prepare them to meet the needs of the critical care units in hospitals with regard to nutritional therapy.
